SIERRA LEONE MAP HISTORY

Sierra Leone is a Country in West Africa that is bordered with Guinea in the North, Liberia in the South and the Atlantic Ocean in the West. It has a population of six million people and it capital is Freetown. The Country has a tropical climate and the oldest University in West Africa known as Fourah Bay College established in 1827 which became the educational center in West Africa.

In 1462, a Portuguese explorer name Pedro Da Centra visited the country who gave it the name Sierra Leone, meaning Lion Mountains. Sierra Leone became an important center for transatlantic slave trade between sixteen century to eighteen century. In 1808 the country became a British Crown Colony and gained independence April 27th 1961. In 1991 the rebel war began that lasted until 2001 and was resolved by United Nation led by Nigerian forces.

Between 1991 to 2001, over 40,000 people were killed mostly women and children. Women were sexually abused and raped, children were captured and recruited by the rebel force to kill innocent people. The economy was in shambled, development came to standstill, destruction of infrastructure, schools and hospitals were damaged, children no longer attended schools, people have no access to basic medical treatment, infection and diseases rise to a high level and maternal death increased. The brutal war inflicted permanent physical and emotional scars that is evident when you meet the people and the survivors.

Based on these terrible conditions, the Sierra Leone Nurses association was founded by a group of Sierra Leonean nurses in Los Angeles California in order to assist in providing basic medical equipment for the treatment of the sick and the disable, to reduce infection and diseases. We cannot do it by ourselves without your support and by working together we can all make this mission a successful one.

Mission Statement

To relive pain and suffering caused by disease conditions that could be cure or controlled. Provide access to the people of Sierra Leone to simple but important medical equipment and supplies needed to diagnose medical condition and treat diseases. Educate the community to understand ways to prevent the spread of communicable diseases and to prevent medical problems associated with maternal and child health, Hypertension, Diabetes, , Heart disease, Stroke, Cancer of various types, HIV, AIDS, Malaria and many other diseases. To educate the poor and underprivileged on subjects useful to individuals and beneficial to the community.

Purpose

To assist in improving the health care system in Sierra Leone.

Objectives

To assist in providing medical equipments and medications to the people of Sierra Leone.

To provide education by awarding scholarships to qualify pupils that want to purse a career in health care system.

To educate health care workers in order to cope with the new technology and changes in health care system.

To educate the public on health promotion and disease prevention.
